Dagger Tattoo Meaning: Through the Heart, the Rose and the Skull
Published October 22, 2026

Short answer: a dagger tattoo usually means courage, protection and being ready to fight for yourself or others. What it pierces changes the meaning: a dagger through a heart means heartbreak or betrayal, through a rose it means love mixed with pain, and through a skull it means beating death or danger. Daggers are among the oldest designs in Western tattooing, from sailors’ and soldiers’ flash, and they still work as a bold symbol of strength or of cutting ties with the past.
The dagger is simple, vertical and strong, which is why it’s been a favourite in tattoo shops for over a century. Here is what the main versions mean.
Courage, protection and sacrifice
A blade is a tool for defending and attacking, so the plain meaning of a dagger is courage and readiness. Many people choose it as a symbol of protecting family, standing up for themselves or surviving something dangerous. A dagger can also stand for sacrifice, someone willing to take a hit for others, or for a hard decision that “cut” something out of your life.
There is a darker side too. “A stab in the back” means betrayal, and some people get a dagger to remember a betrayal they survived.
Classic sailor and soldier flash
In early Western tattooing, sailors and soldiers picked designs from sheets of ready-made “flash”. Daggers were everywhere, often combined with other symbols:
- Dagger through a heart: heartbreak, betrayal, or a love that hurt.
- Dagger through a rose: beauty and danger together; love and loss.
- Dagger through a skull: overcoming death, or facing danger without fear.
- Dagger with a snake: danger, cunning and a warning to others.
- Dagger with a banner: often with words like “Death before dishonor”, a military motto that means honour matters more than life.
These designs are still at the heart of the American traditional style, with bold black outlines and solid red, green and yellow. For more on hearts, see our heart tattoo guide.
Daggers around the world
- The commando dagger: the slim Fairbairn-Sykes fighting knife from the Second World War appears in the badges of several special forces units, so it is a common tattoo among veterans.
- The athame: in modern Wicca and witchcraft, a ritual knife used to direct energy, not to cut. It stands for will and spiritual protection.
- The kris: the wavy-bladed dagger of Indonesia and Malaysia, often treated as a family heirloom with spiritual power. UNESCO recognises the Indonesian kris as cultural heritage.
- The tanto: the short blade carried by Japanese warriors, often shown in samurai tattoos as a sign of honour.
Design and placement
- Forearm, calf or shin: the long, straight shape follows the bone.
- Sternum and spine: a vertical dagger, often with flowers or ornaments, is a popular fine-line or ornamental design.
- Handle details: bone, ornate metal or a jewelled pommel make the design yours.
- Style: traditional for bold, timeless flash; black and grey realism for metal shine and engraved details; fine line for a delicate version.
- Visibility: a large, realistic blade on the hand or neck can look aggressive to some people. Think about where you’ll want to show it.
