We Read 290 Hanoi Tattoo Studio Reviews: What Actually Goes Wrong

Short answer: Most bad experiences at Hanoi tattoo studios come from five things: the price changing after the work is done, an apprentice tattooing you without your agreement, small tattoos being rushed, gloves not being changed during the session, and design details getting lost in translation. You can prevent nearly all of them with a few questions before the needle starts.

In October 2026 we read about 290 Google Maps reviews of 11 tattoo studios in and around Hanoi’s Old Quarter. For each studio we read the “Most relevant” reviews and then re-sorted the list by “Lowest rating”. We didn’t do this to criticise other studios, so none are named here. We wanted to know what real customers say when a tattoo trip goes badly, because nobody puts that in their marketing.

First finding: critical reviews exist, but you have to sort to see them

In Google’s default “Most relevant” order, only 4 of the first 260 reviews we read gave 1 to 3 stars. When we re-sorted by “Lowest rating”, 11 of the 13 studios we checked did have critical reviews, 121 in total, although about half were more than two years old. An average of 5.0 tells you very little when every studio in the area has one. The critical reviews are the most useful thing on the page, and you’ll only see them if you sort for them. We cover how to judge whether a review profile looks natural in our guide to spotting fake tattoo reviews.

Problem 1: The price changed at the end

This was the most common serious complaint. In one review, a customer agreed a fixed price for a large chest piece and was asked for an extra 10 million VND when it was time to pay. Another reviewer, who already had a lot of tattoos, felt they were quoted about twice what the work was worth. A third reviewer said their tattoo didn’t turn out the way they wanted, and thought that was probably because they had negotiated the price down.

How to avoid it: Get the final price in writing before you start, in a WhatsApp or Instagram message, not just spoken at the counter. Ask directly whether anything could raise it, such as extra hours, colour, or touch-ups. Don’t haggle aggressively. A large discount usually comes back as less time spent on your tattoo. Our guide to tourist pricing in Hanoi explains what a fair quote looks like.

Problem 2: An apprentice did the work, and nobody told them

One of the most detailed 1-star reviews described asking for an experienced artist and only finding out halfway through that an apprentice was doing the tattoo. The same customer had asked for solid black shading and got light grey instead. Being tattooed by an apprentice isn’t a bad thing in itself, but it should be your decision.

How to avoid it: Ask for the artist by name, look at that person’s own portfolio, and confirm on the day that the person preparing your station is the one you booked. More on this in what to know about getting tattooed by an apprentice.

Problem 3: Small tattoos were rushed

Several reviews were about small pieces: a finger tattoo where half the ink fell out, lettering with letters of uneven height and line thickness, and linework that felt “a bit rushed”. Small tattoos are cheap and quick, so in a busy tourist area they are the easiest ones to rush.

How to avoid it: For lettering, check the stencil carefully, especially the spacing and letter heights, before you approve it. For fingers and hands, ask how the artist handles fading there, because these spots lose ink faster on everyone. Treat a small tattoo as just as permanent as a large one.

Problem 4: Hygiene that looked fine but wasn’t

One 3-star reviewer loved the finished tattoo and said the studio used single-use needles and gloves. But the artist never changed gloves during the whole session, even after touching non-sterile surfaces. It’s an easy thing to miss when you’re focused on the tattoo, and it’s exactly the kind of detail a checklist would catch.

How to avoid it: Watch whether gloves are changed after the artist touches a phone, a lamp, or a door handle. Our 2-minute hygiene checklist lists what to look for before you sit down.

Problem 5: Small things that ruined the trip

Some complaints weren’t about the tattoo at all. Two studios were criticised because the opening hours on Google didn’t match the real ones, and for a traveller with only a few days, that was enough to spoil the trip. Another reviewer waited 4 to 5 days for a reply to their first message. A design took “a number of revisions, probably due to the language barrier”.

How to avoid it: Message ahead and confirm both the time and the artist the day before. Send reference images with clear sizes and placement, as explained in our guide to consultations across a language barrier. Leave a buffer day in case the design needs another round.

What the good reviews have in common

The positive reviews were just as consistent. The topics Google’s own tags picked out most often across these studios were kind or patient staff, a clean studio, the artist adapting a reference into a custom design, and clear aftercare instructions. “First tattoo experience” and having a translator also came up again and again. The happiest reviewers mentioned their artist by name, said they didn’t feel rushed, and described having their placement checked before the stencil went on. This lines up with our checklist for a trustworthy studio.
