Only 1 in 100 Hanoi Tattoo Reviews Says How the Tattoo Healed

Short answer: Google reviews of tattoo studios tell you about the experience, not about how the tattoo will look in a year. In our sample of 1,554 reviews of Hanoi Old Quarter studios, only about 15 (roughly 1%) said anything about how the tattoo had healed. To judge healed quality, use the “Search reviews” box on Google Maps to find the rare follow-up reviews, look at reviewers’ photos taken weeks later, and ask the studio for healed photos of the style you want.

What we found

In October 2026 we collected the newest and most relevant reviews, plus the lowest-rated ones for some studios, from 13 tattoo studios in and around Hanoi’s Old Quarter. After removing duplicates, that came to 1,554 reviews. We didn’t count our own studio.

  • 1,508 of the 1,554 (97%) gave 5 stars. Only 29 gave 1 to 3 stars.
  • They were short. The median review was 26 words long, and 40% were 20 words or fewer.
  • Only about 15 described the tattoo after it had healed, with lines like “healed perfectly” or “I got my tattoo 3 months ago”. One reviewer promised to “add my pictures once it is healed” and, as far as we could see, never did.
  • The rest described the day itself: friendly staff, a clean studio, a patient artist, how quickly they got an appointment.

This isn’t a criticism of the reviewers or the studios. Most travellers leave a review in the studio or on the walk back to their hotel, while the tattoo is still wrapped. On that day, every tattoo looks sharp. Swelling and fresh ink flatter almost any work. Problems like blurred fine lines, patchy shading or ink falling out only show up weeks later, after most people have left Vietnam.

Why it matters more for a tattoo you get while travelling

At home, if a tattoo heals badly you can walk back in for a touch-up. After a trip to Hanoi, that might mean another flight. So healed quality is exactly the thing you most need to know, and it’s the thing star ratings show least. In our earlier look at what goes wrong at Hanoi studios, the most damaging stories, such as ink falling out of a finger tattoo or a tattoo that was “overworked and got infected”, all came from the rare reviewers who wrote again after the tattoo had healed.

How to find the reviews that actually matter

  1. Use the “Search reviews” box. On a studio’s Google Maps page, open the Reviews tab and tap the magnifying glass. Search for “healed”, “months later” or “weeks later”. This turns 1,000 reviews into the handful written after healing.
  2. Open reviewer photos and look at the dates. A photo posted weeks after the review, or a reviewer who shows a fresh and a healed photo side by side, is worth more than ten “amazing experience” reviews.
  3. Read the edited reviews. Google marks a review as “Edited” when the writer comes back to change it. Sometimes that’s an update after healing, either good or bad.
  4. Search for your style. If you want fine line, search “fine line” together with “healed”. Fine line is the style where the gap between a fresh and a healed tattoo tends to be biggest.
  5. Check the 1–3 star reviews separately. Sort by “Lowest rating”. Late complaints about fading, blowout or infection are rare but very informative.

What to ask the studio directly

Reviews will only get you so far. Before you book, ask:

  • “Can I see healed photos of this artist’s work in my style?” Not just fresh portfolio shots. We explain what to look for in our guide to reading a tattoo portfolio.
  • “How do you expect this design to age at this size and placement?” A good artist will tell you honestly if your fine lines are too close together or your lettering is too small to last. More on this in will a tattoo from Hanoi hold up long-term?
  • “What happens if a spot heals patchy after I’ve left?” The answer shows you how the studio handles touch-ups for travellers.

Once you have your tattoo, remember that it will look rough while it heals. Our day-by-day healing timeline and why a fresh tattoo can look wrong explain what’s normal.

What to expect at GOAT Tattoo Studio

Our 5.0 Google rating has the same limitation as everyone else’s. Most of our reviews are also written on the day. So during your free consultation, ask to see healed examples of the style you want from the artist you’re considering, and judge us on those. And if you get tattooed with us, we’d be grateful if you came back to your review in a month with a healed photo, good or bad. It’s the review that helps the next traveller most.
