Guest Artist Cò Xám: Black & Grey Mythology Back Pieces

Short answer: Cò Xám is a guest artist at GOAT Tattoo Studio in Hanoi’s Old Quarter. He specialises in large-scale black & grey realism, mostly full backs and body suits built around Chinese mythology and Three Kingdoms history. Guest dates are limited, so if you want a piece from him, contact us before you lock in your travel dates.

Who Cò Xám is

Cò Xám is known for bold, dramatic black & grey work at a scale most artists rarely attempt: whole backs and body suits packed with figures, weapons, armour, clouds and architecture. His pieces rely on deep shading and strong contrast rather than colour, and much of his work is freehand, meaning he draws large parts of the design directly onto the skin instead of relying only on a printed stencil. That matters on a back, where the composition has to follow the shoulder blades, spine and waist rather than sit flat like a poster.

You can see his work on his artist page.

Four back pieces from his portfolio

These four pieces come from Cò Xám’s own portfolio, which we shared when we announced his guest spot. They show what he does best.

  • A cloaked warrior over a skeletal figure. A hooded fighter swings a long blade above a skeleton under a stormy sky. Most of the drama comes from contrast: near-black clouds against open, lighter skin around the figures.
  • A strategist with a feather fan. A calm scholar stands in front of a city wall, with a game-board grid and charging horsemen below him. The feather fan is the classic attribute of Zhuge Liang, the famous strategist of the Three Kingdoms period.
  • The Monkey King in prayer. A meditating Sun Wukong fills the back, with Buddhist figures behind him and the character 忠 (loyalty) at the top. If this figure interests you, our monkey tattoo meaning guide covers his story.
  • A young general in battle. An armoured rider charges through a battle scene, with soldiers and banners filling the background all the way down to the lower back.

Why these themes suit a full back

Characters from the Three Kingdoms and Journey to the West come with a strong visual vocabulary: armour, robes, weapons, horses, clouds. That gives an artist a few large, clear shapes to build the composition around, plus room for smaller story details in the background. Black & grey keeps a busy scene readable, because the eye follows light and dark rather than competing colours. We explain how big compositions are planned in how a large tattoo design comes together, and what separates good shading from patchy work in our black & grey realism guide.

What to ask before booking a guest artist for a back piece

  • His dates, first. A guest artist is only in the studio for a limited time. Check those dates before you book flights.
  • How many sessions he estimates. A full back at this level of detail takes several long sessions. Ask whether they fit inside both his guest dates and your trip.
  • What happens if it isn’t finished. Ask before the first session how the piece would continue if it can’t be completed during his stay. Our guide to unfinished large tattoo projects covers the questions worth asking.
  • The quote, in writing. Our full-piece price guide shows typical ranges for full backs by style, but confirm the quote for your piece with us before you start.
  • Your references. Bring the character, scene or pose you have in mind. Knowing whether you want Guan Yu, Zhuge Liang or the Monkey King makes the first conversation much more useful.
