How to Actually Prepare for Your Tattoo Appointment
Published August 27, 2026

Most of the advice about “preparing” for a tattoo is either about what to wear or what to bring to the consultation — this is the part in between, the physical prep that actually affects how your skin takes ink and how the session itself feels.
In the days and weeks before
- Moisturize the area regularly in the week or two leading up to your appointment. Well-hydrated skin generally takes ink more evenly than dry skin — this isn’t a last-minute fix, so starting early matters more than slathering on lotion the morning of.
- Avoid sun exposure or sunburn on the area beforehand. Sunburned or freshly tanned skin is more sensitive, harder to tattoo cleanly, and in some cases means postponing the session entirely — worth planning around if your trip includes beach days.
- Get real sleep the night before, and the nights leading up to it if it’s a longer session. Being genuinely rested measurably affects how a session feels, more than most people expect going in.
Shaving: let your artist handle it if you can
Most studios prefer to shave the area themselves with sterile tools right before starting — it’s simply more controlled than what happens with a home razor. If you do want to shave beforehand yourself, the honest guidance is 12–48 hours before your appointment, not the same day, using a fresh razor with light pressure. Shaving too close to the session raises the odds of micro-cuts, razor burn, or irritation, and irritated skin is genuinely harder to work on cleanly than skin that’s had time to settle.
The morning of
- Eat a real meal beforehand, and stay hydrated. Showing up hungry or dehydrated makes a session physically harder than it needs to be, and it’s one of the more common reasons people feel lightheaded partway through.
- Skip the alcohol, even if you think it’ll help with nerves. It genuinely does the opposite in practice — our guide on alcohol before a tattoo covers exactly why.
- If you’re on medication or managing a health condition, mention it when you book rather than the day of, if you haven’t already — our guide on medical conditions and tattoos covers what’s actually worth flagging in advance.
What doesn’t actually matter as much as people think
- A specific “detox” diet or supplement routine isn’t necessary — a normal, real meal and good hydration cover what actually matters physically.
- Waxing right before your appointment isn’t a good substitute for shaving — it irritates the skin more than a fresh, careful shave does, and that irritation is exactly what you’re trying to avoid.
What to expect at GOAT Tattoo Studio
We’ll shave the area ourselves as part of getting set up, using sterile, single-use equipment — you don’t need to do it yourself. If anything about your specific piece needs particular prep, we’ll flag it during your consultation so there are no surprises on the day.
